ADHD / Learning Disabilities

ADHD and learning disabilities are neurodevelopmental disorders (i.e., something that individuals are born with). These conditions individually occur in 5-10% of students; however, 25-40% of people with ADHD also have dyslexia. It is the rule rather than the exception that children with ADHD frequently have comorbid conditions such as dyslexia, anxiety, depression, or oppositional defiant disorder. Without a neuropsychological evaluation, it is hard to determine all of the factors that may be contributing to a person’s difficulties. Students require a thorough neuropsychological evaluation to identify an accurate diagnosis and assist with prescribing the best evidence-based interventions to promote their success.

UNDERSTANDING

The benefits of a neuropsychological evaluation include:

  • Identification of core difficulties that interfere with reading, writing, and/or math to determine effective tutoring strategies and therapeutic interventions
  • Assistance qualifying for special education services at school through an Individualized Education Program (IEP) if appropriate
  • Assistance qualifying for formal accommodations and modifications through a Section 504 Plan (e.g., extended time, testing in a quiet environment, and preferential seating)
  • Determine interventions that may be helpful for managing ADHD symptoms at home and at school
